Even the score sounds like a pale imitation of John Williams' famous E.T. score.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing while watching it. The problem was everything about it felt low grade, from the amateurish acting to the glitchy alien animatronics...and unlike E.T. it just doesn't leave a lasting impression, so I guess they needed to bite what they could to sell it.
