We see throughout the movie that she takes an active role in the community and at one point even appeared on tv. It took the mob leader having a snitch in the police station tattle. Was he really powerful or that connected that her location wasn't busted earlier?

Probably no one thought about looking into the local community charity work. And a report about nuns isn't that interesting. On the other hand if she was coaching a football team, that would be big sport news men might watch.
Nowadays with internet and social networking, I wonder if it is even possible to go into hiding. Just put a photo on the web and some one will spot you in no time wherever you are in the world.
