De verschrikkelijke winter van 1954 in Parijs. De allerarmsten leven in grote angst hun huis uitgezet te worden, terwijl er ook enkelen zijn die zelfs helemaal geen onderdak hebben. Dan schiet Zorro ofwel Vader Pierre te hulp.

Postwar France was slow to recover from the after-effects of the World War Two. The economy was doing poorly, and many people were poor and homeless, sleeping under bridges, etc. The winter of 1953-54 proved particularly difficult for these people, as it was one of the coldest on record. Father Pierre (Lambert Wilson), a parish priest, on seeing the suffering of these people (and their frequent death from the cold), was moved to write the French government seeking help for them. When his letter, which was published in the newspapers, succeeded in rousing overwhelming popular support for helping the homeless, he was able to form a charitable group (still active today) titled "Les Chiffoniers d'Emmaus," or "The Ragpickers of Emmaus" to channel help to them. This biographical film tells the true story of Abbe Pierre's successful efforts in those years.

1954, l'hiver est particulièrement rigoureux et 9 ans après la guerre, la priorité n'est pas au logement. Des sans-abris dorment dans la rue, alors que certains trouvent asile dans la maison de l'abbé Pierre. Ancien député, ancien résistant et créateur des Chiffonniers Bâtisseurs d'Emmaüs, il se consacre aux plus déshérités. Il propose au Sénat le projet de « cités d'urgence » qui le refusera dans la nuit du 3 au 4 janvier. Cette même nuit, un bébé meurt gelé par le froid. Il lance alors un appel poignant à la radio afin de recueillir des dons et le Figaro publie une lettre ouverte.

En 1954, durante un invierno especialmente frio y duro, mientras unos se ven obligados a dormir en la calle, otros encuentran asilo en la casa del Abad Pierre, un antiguo diputado que perteneció a la Resistencia y que ahora consagra su vida a cuidar de los más desfavorecidos. Presenta en el Senado un proyecto de "Casas de emergencia" como refugio para albergar durante el invierno a las personas sin hogar. La muerte de un bebé por congelación lo lleva a lanzar un estremecedor mensaje desde la radio, que es publicado en las páginas de "Le Figaro", lo que servirá para reforzar su propuesta.
