This flick has a lot of style. I remember when they remade it with Laurence Fishburne... I didn't see a lot of point to that remake. But they did set it in Detroit.
I liked this film, too. In many ways, it seems American films of the 1970s were more willing to take risks that they aren't willing to take now.
I remember reading on the old IMDB that this film was notable for breaking a taboo in American movies, which, for all the violence American films are known for, generally do not show direct violence against a minor.
Yet, here, we see a young girl fully shown getting shot dead. (Compare this to a more recent film like "A History of Violence" where the murder of a child takes place off-screen: in that film, we see the gun go off, but we never actually see the girl die).
Granted, it is not that this is NEVER shown-- recall the TV episode of Breaking Bad where the kid is shot and killed in the desert --but it is rare.
Oddly, for all the criticism American films take from Europeans for being overly violent, I have heard that the depiction of child murder is less of a taboo in European films (come to think of it, the recent British film "Lady MacBeth" depicts rather explicitly child strangulation).
the remake with laurence fishburne is a good movie on its own terms, reel man
I guess you're right... I respect Fish, and I believe that they changed the story from the original. Sounds promising. This is in my Netflix queue now!
