Discuss Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Does anyone have any insights into these strange, erect but still floppy, orange gnome hats the guys repairing the Klingon Bird Of Prey were wearing?

One of the standout images from this movie along with that strange long white haired and moustached dude from the Starfleet outpost who first encounter the giant moist angry cigar.

"San Francisco" I was born there says Sulu.

However, as we all know, Starfleet is based in San Francisco so surely Sulu must have mentioned that a few times over the years whenever they've been there?

Given the comedic tone of the movie it therefore would have been funny if the whole crew had rolled their eyes in response and given it "yeah Sulu, give it a rest we all know!"

Would the lisp shaming of Chekov be allowed these days? I'm not so sure...

Or is it just because of his accent? But then same difference, surely you can't laugh at people for their "funny" foreign accents either...

Now on to shaming of another kind - slaughtering whales. Interestingly no outright naming and shaming of the Japanese here...

Poor error there - Scotty gets thousands and millions of miles mixed up when discussing travelling distances over the planet Earth, i.e. his home planet? Seems unlikely, maybe the time-travel scrambled his brains...

I thought they were Norwegian scum, not Japanese scum.

I think they're both fully signed up members of the Whaling Axis of Evil...

Pair of double dumb asses!

That dude does a LOT of hosing down the outside of the cetacean institute doesn't he? Perhaps the place doubles up as a fishmongers...

Would Gillian really have latched on to Bill when he was getting beamed back up into the Bird Of Prey? I'm not too sure. Surely The Fly would be fresh on everyone's minds at that point in the 80s - the thought of a scramble Kirk / Dr Taylor mess should really have stopped her there...

Was a real treat actually to recognise Catherine Hicks in a episode of Diagnosis Murder once. I guess her career didn't really take off after this.

And there it is, perhaps The Greatest moment in Star Trek movie history (and bringing us full circle with Spock's comments in Wrath of Khan:-

"If I may be so bold, it was a mistake for you to accept promotion. Commanding a starship is your first, best destiny; anything else is a waste of material."

)
James T Kirk is reduced in rank to Captain Kirk. Up there with Spock's death in the lip biting stakes for me...

And a final shout out for the boys down at the Starfleet Docks. They certainly knocked that Enterprise A out in double fast time. Don't know what the time frame was from the end of Search For Spock but we can't be talking more than a few days. Incredible effort!

He was also described as a retard when he was captured by the Navy, that's another no-no these days.

She did 243 episodes of the show 7th Heaven, unfortunately you won't see it repeated on TV due to the actions of her (fellow Star Trek alumni) co-star.

As is revealed in the next movie, they didn't exactly do a perfect job.
