The story, filmed by the man who did it all, Dick Proenneke, is one of the most amazing and fascinating documentaries I've ever seen. It shows how, at age 50, he built a log cabin in the Alaskan wilderness. The film covers the first 16 months of his stay there (a stay that lasted several decades), as he builds the cabin from scratch, plants vegetables, hunts and fishes, and just enjoys a wilderness life. He shows his knowledge and skill by doing everything by himself, including complicated carpentry and stonework, to build a beautiful cabin on the edge of the water.
I highly recommend this to anyone, especially those who like the wilderness and like seeing what it takes to be self-sufficient and do something remarkable on one's own.
