Better than Shades

James Spader is Mr Grey(!) in this kinky and darkly amusing film. Maggie Gyllenhaal is his obedient secretary ! She does as she is told!! The S and M theme in this film, is so much better than Shades.. and James Spader is truly in his element. God, that man was hot! It is also touching, and has moments of pathos. I loved it - so quirky and different.

I love this movie. Great acting, great story. And I agree, it's wonderfully quirky! But to compare it to 50 Shades of Grey? Like comparing apples and apple sauce. Secretary is a well-written, well-acted film with 3-dimensional characters, and it just happens to have a theme of exploring S&M. 50 Shades has no point, it's just cheesy smut with no character development, a lame plot that could have been written by a 7th grader, and the less we say about the quality of the acting the better. Ugh.
Secretary made me appreciate Maggie Gyllenhaal as an actress. And made me appreciate James Spader again.
