Got here from a long journey and glad I did. I was watching a cooking show and Elon Musk's wife was on it (I think) and she was talking about virtual reality. Strange small talk but she was intelligent so that qualifies as small talk to her! She said there is a theory that our world is not real, because if we can create a realistic VR, then logically there is a chance we are existing in a VR created by someone else. And maybe they are in a reality created by someone before them.
It is an interesting concept and it reminded me a bit of The Matrix, so I watched that again last week. It is an ok film but for me it left a lot to be desired. Then I googled it and saw a thread where someone mentioned they preferred this film. So I just watched this and it was just what I needed! It is not an action movie like the Matrix but more focused on characters and the story, and I found it a lot more satisfying.

Just watched this movie again, and I have to say....after playing games like Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto, this movie has taken a whole new meaning for me. Really enjoyed it.

It wasn't that it was just over looked. It was absolutely obliterated by critics to such an extent that it went straight to dvd here in the UK.
I really liked it and was always baffled by the way it was treated. Today this should be seen as a lost gem.
It wasn't just The Matrix that was released at the same time. You also had Existenz dealing with the whole reality questioning thing too. All three were released in the same few months. So there probably was a bit of fake reality fatigue going on. But still no excuse.
You guys may not be aware, but The Thirteenth Foor is a remake. So you may want to check out the German original- World on a Wire. It goes into a lot more detail.

Maybe. But Existenz wasn't a big actioner like The Matrix and that got good reviews. Though it was directed by David Cronenberg so critics probably took more notice.
I would say that depends more on the action film. But I do agree that The Matrix is overated. The acting is wooden as hell and the philosophizing is far too simple.
Both are based on a book called Simulacron-3. I haven't read it but I'm sure it's interesting. I find simulation theory fascinating.
Maybe a tv show?

It is, yes. If you haven't seen it already you should watch the film Her by Spike Jonze. It's about a guy who has a relationship with his Operating System. It explores what you're talking about. And I wouldn't be surprised if it's a pretty accurate prediction of the future.
