The dead rising theory?

I know Barbara and Johnny hear that a satellite carrying radiation from Venius is heard on the radio and may have caused the dead to rise.
Dawn says that when hell filled up the dead walked.
Day has the survivors looking for a cure and this could mean it was biological or germ warfare.
What do you think caused the dead to rise?

That is what I was hoping to find out for years. It seems that the reason for the dead coming back is inconsistent from various films. Even in modern stuff like TWD, I don't believe that was ever truly focused on or explored.
My guess would be that it is something chemical related, like a germ or biological thing causing them to reanimate. I don't know.
