Movies I own on DVD. Yes, I know it's not Blu-ray! But I can't afford to replace my entire collection of oldies.

American Graffiti
It's 1962. '50s cool cars, killer music and an all-star cast from before they were stars. The story doesn't really mean anything here, it's all about the ambience of the period. So put on a white T-shirt, slick back your hair and feel young again.

A quintasential '80s movie. A time-jumping rollercoaster ride everyone will enjoy getting on board.

Blind Date
It might be dated now but it's still a great little movie. Back before Bruce Willis was BRUCE WILLIS!

Batman
Probably one of the first serious attempts at bringing a comic to the big screen with a decent budget. The vision of the world is brilliant. Keaton's Batman is spot on and the Prince soundtrack ties the whole thing together perfectly. Unfortunately, Tim Burton's flamboyance lets things down in the end. But still the most memorable Batman to date. Although Ben Affleck's jaded, grumpy and bulked-out depiction of the character in Batman V Superman is my favourite.

The Abyss
A fantastic movie ruined by the studio's shortsightedness. Be sure to watch James Cameron's version of this movie, aliens included, to get the full and best experience! The cinema release was a botch. The Abyss proves you can have a big action film that hits all the right marks with zero profanity!

Black Rain
Black Rain is one of those cop movies that's just downright cool. Unfortunately, it became dated quite quickly, but if you can look past that it's very much worth a watch. Ridley Scott knows how to make a good movie. And Michael Douglas certainly knows how to act.

Always
A genuinely delightful romance movie with a difference that will seesaw you between tears of laughter and tears of sadness. Spielberg knows how to make movies, it has to be said, and this one pushes all the right buttons.

Maybe a little better than the second movie, but still not a patch on the first. It's worth a watch for the in-jokes but have a standby movie ready.

Batman Returns
Tim Burton's original Batman definitely deserved a worthy sequel. Unfortunately, this just doesn't cut it. Keaton's Batman deserved more grit and drama, not corny comical antics. It's worth a look, but keep your expectations low.

Dave
A lovely romantic comedy in that true eighties style. A little charmer of a movie starring the ever-watchable Kevin Kline. I'll admit I'm pretty old-fashioned and, even in today's evil world, I cling to the hope there are still good-hearted people out there somewhere. This is one of those movies keeping that hope alive. Let the soft side of you out and enjoy this film.

Stargate
Ok, this movie is pretty dated compared to modern sci-fi movies, but try to keep in mind it was first released back in 1994. This film is worth its salt simply by the virtue of being unique. To my knowledge, there hasn't been another movie to tackle this subject, and you have to admit the whole idea of extraterrestrial life building the great pyramids is pretty damn intriguing. I'm a big Kirt Russell fan but, unfortunately, he looks like he was utterly bored while making this movie.

French Kiss
Yes, I'm a testosterone-driven macho male, but I have to admit this is one of my favourite movies. Over the years I've owned this one on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray and have literally watched it hundreds of times. It's a nice romantic-ish feel-good movie. Every character is a joy to watch and the script is endlessly quotable as my wife and I regularly punctuate conversations with wee snippets from this movie. So many people knock Kevin Kline's French accent in this, but they are wrong! The man is fluent in french for God's sake.

Something to Talk About
This is a lovely film, filled with very well-rounded characters, sharp skrip work and packed with actors who can actually act. This is one of those movies you can simply relax with. You don't need a PHD to understand it and you don't need ear defenders to save your hearing from an overblown soundtrack. So pour a glass of your favourite alcoholic beverage, sit back and enjoy.

Air Force One
Ok, this is a pretty ridiculous movie, but aren't all action movies? It's Harrison Ford doing what Harrison Ford does but in the confines of a plane in midair against a bunch of gun-toting terrorists. So just switch off your brain and enjoy.

The Transporter
Jason Statham's breakout movie. And it's the perfect vehicle for him. Let's face it in almost every movie Statham is just Statham, but that's ok, it's exactly what we want to see. This is basically Luc Besson's version of a Jackie Chan movie. And it really does work. Ok, the BMW bridge jump was nothing short of cringeworthy, but the rest of the movie is enjoyable enough that we can forgive that...just.

Paycheck
Oh dear, this one's pretty bad. There are a lot of faces in this movie but non of them could save this disaster. Which is a shame, because this could have been a really intense and thrilling film in the hands of a different director. Instead, it comes across as a made-for-TV movie. John Woo's direction is lacklustre and cliche, the editing is lazy and the soundtrack is overblown, unfitting and downright intrusive.

A very self-involved and glum Batman, not my favourite. Once we finally get to Batman being Batman it's a cool movie. And Christian Bale wears the cape well, but the villains lack grit.

War of the Worlds
An intense, serious and harrowing portrayal of the H.G. Wells classic. Tom Cruise doing an excellent job of not being Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning out acting everyone. It's hard to call this film an enjoyable watch as it's actually emotionally affecting at times, with some very raw realism concerning human nature. This movie manages to keep a constantly high pace without being exhausting to watch. Well worth a place in your collection.

I didn't watch this movie before I bought it on its release day. But I'm a big Charlize Theron fan, so it was bound to be good. I'm a big sci-fi fan, so I was bound to like it. I like movies that are a little different, so it was bound to be worth watching. Oh man, when I'm wrong I'm WRONG!
