The Millennium Series is a film franchise based off the best-selling novels by Stieg Larsson and David Lagercrantz centering around the iconic literary characters of Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. The novels were published as follows: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, The Girl in the Spider's Web, The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye.
The first three novels, all written by Larsson before his death, were adapted into a six-part TV-Miniseries for Sweden called Millennium. This was subsequently the material used to create the three individual films that were release theatrically in America. The series, and the trilogy of films (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest; all released throughout 2009) featured Noomi Rapace as Salander and Michael Nyqvist as Blomkvist.
The first true film adaptation of Larsson's original novel came with the 2011 David Fincher film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo starring Rooney Mara as Salander and Daniel Craig as Blomkvist.
in 2018, Lagercrantz's first contribution to the series, The Girl in the Spider's Web, was also adapted into a feature film, starring Claire Foy as Salander and Sverrir Gudnason as Blomkvist. The film is directed by Fede Alvarez.
