Het jaar 1398. Kort na het vestigen van de Joseon-Dynastie wordt Min-jae Kim door de koning benoemd tot opperbevelhebber van het leger. Dat is tegen het zere been van Bang-won Yi, de zoon van de koning, die zich toch al achtergesteld voelt omdat niet hij maar zijn zwager Jin eerder was aangewezen als kroonprins en troonopvolger. Jin, getrouwd met een dochter van de koning, heeft weinig interesse in politiek, maar des te meer in drank en mooie vrouwen. Hij heeft daarbij bijzondere belangstelling voor de mooie courtisane van commandant Min-jae Kim.
Wanneer Hwe-yeon gedwongen wordt door prins Sung-won om de nieuwe vrouw van de koning te worden, loopt ze samen met haar geliefde Kwon-yoo weg. De prins vindt het stel in een boerenschuur en neem Hwe-yeon alsnog mee naar het paleis, terwijl Kwon-yoo fysiek zwaar wordt gestraft.
