A Saigon, durante la guerra in Vietnam il capitano dei corpi speciali Benjamin Willard riceve dai superiori l'ordine di trovare ed eliminare il colonnello Walter Kurtz che uscito con i suoi soldati dai ranghi dell'esercito americano, sta combattendo una guerra personale ai confini fra il Vietnam e la Cambogia. Scortato da alcuni uomini, Willard risale un fiume a caccia del colonnello. Dopo varie peripezie il capitano individua Kurtz all'interno di una sorta di reggia-tempio protetta dalla vegetazione e da numerosi indigeni armati. Willard non sa che fare, ma è lo stesso Kurtz che lo induce ad eseguire la condanna.

Durante una ricognizione nel Vietnam quattro dei cinque componenti di una squadra di fanti nordamericani sequestrano, stuprano collettivamente e assassinano una ragazza vietnamita. Come s'usa in questi casi, le pesanti pene furono ridotte in appello. L'unico film bellico di De Palma è un cattivo film. Diffamare la guerra è un dovere, ma qui lo si fa in modi ipocritamente e provincialmente americani. Nemmeno il dilemma etico che affligge il gracile soldato Eriksson (qual è la discriminante tra solidarietà e omertà?) diventa espressivo. La sceneggiatura di David Rabe (Streamers) è basata su un libro di D. Lang, giornalista reduce dal Vietnam.
