'McFarland, USA' handler om træneren John White, der tvinges til at flytte fra sit hjem i Boise, Idaho. Sammen med sin familie kommer han til den økonomisk udfordrede by McFarland, Californien, hvor indbyggerne primært består af latinamerikanere. White stifter i sit nye job som idrætslærer og fodboldtræner bekendtskab med nogle af de lokale drenge og beslutter sig for at oprette et løbehold. På trods af store kulturelle forskelle kæmper træneren og holdet af underkuede high school-atleter sammen om at nå deres mål: At konkurrere i et vigtigt mesterskab.
