Koncom apríla 2003 sa 27-ročný Aron Ralston vydal do utahského kaňonu Blue John zliezať steny a odpočinúť si tak od mestského života. Nikomu o svojich horolezeckých plánoch nepovedal. Keď mu balvan prišpendlil predlaktie ku skalnej stene, nikto nevedel, kde ho hľadať. Ralston so sebou mal len svoju výbavu, vodu, trochu jedla a lacný multifunkčný, ale predovšetkým tupý nôž.
