Děj filmu je zasazený do let 1944–1945 a vypráví příběh židovské dívky Rachel, jež se ukrývá v okupovaném Holandsku. Potom, co je svědkem masakru celé své rodiny, se připojí k domácímu hnutí odboje. Dostane za úkol napojit se na velitelství gestapa tím, že svede šarmantního německého kapitána. Verhoeven staví svůj film jako velkolepou akční podívanou, na kterou ale zároveň pohlíží s ironickým odstupem. Scénář filmu vychází ze skutečných událostí a staví na hlavní ženské hrdince, která ve filmu představuje jediný záchytný bod. Film totiž dobu i hrdiny popisuje v neustálé ambivalenci. Pohrává si s tradičním pohledem na odboj i nacisty, jejichž zažité obrazy často převrací.

Ke konci druhé světové války pomohl třináctiletý Michiel zraněnému britskému vojákovi. Nedlouho poté se stal součástí odboje, kde zjistil, že surovost války se velmi odlišuje od jeho původních představ.

Michiel je plný chlapeckého vzdoru a touze po dobrodružství, jenže to se brzy změní. Michiel je nucen jednat, ale netuší, komu z dospělých může věřit. Chlapec se v nebezpečných situacích necítí dobře a začíná ho sžírat pocit zoufalství. Realita války je krutá a nemilosrdně ničí jeho dětskou nevinnost. Michiel se musí postavit dobru i zlu, sebrat odvahu, čelit pokrytectví i vlastnímu břemenu odpovědnosti.

Soon, he is allowed to work with the forklift truck in the barn. At night, moved, he listens to old telephone messages from his brother. It seems that previously the latter got the same 'promotion'. It turns out that the seasonal worker has a hidden agenda.

His search takes him along the eight other adopted persons who came with the same flight to Holland. He also visits the orphanage in Seoul where he once lived. He compares the questions and experiences of his adoption with those of his adoptees. He asks himself is weather he is Dutch or Korean. Radstake feels Dutch, but is that because he suppressed his Korean side? In the beginning of the documentary Radstake focuses on his fellow adoptees but as his search progresses, his story gets more personal and is he even trying to find his biological mother.
