Tarzan is a fictional character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in the novel Tarzan of the Apes, first published in a pulp magazine in 1912 and as a book in 1914. The very first Tarzan movie was a silent one, filmed in 1918. More then 80 movies were produced since then. With the advent of the talkies, a popular Tarzan movie franchise was developed, starting with Tarzan the Ape Man in 1932, with a total of twelve films produced until 1948, in which the former Olympic swimmer Johnny Weissmuller performed as Tarzan. The Tarzan yell introduced by these movies is still a reference to this day. Those were the movies that started it all and they continue to be popular, in a class of their own.
