With the turn of the decade, it seems like a good time to reflect on what this means to me and what I hope to build in the next 10 years. When I started TMDB back in 2008, it was just something I did to help out a small community of media centre users. I never would have imagined such an amazing community and group of dedicated people would come together and build something so special. I certainly never would have thought that this would turn into my life’s work, or a full-time job that started for me in 2010.

For better or worse, this project is my life. If you talk to my family and friends, they will probably refer to it as my 3rd child. I live and breathe this thing and most of the time I wouldn’t have it any other way. Looking back, it’s crazy to think of all the milestones that seemed so huge to me at the time. Getting 100 registered users. Hitting 100 requests per second. Hitting our first petabyte a month. Hitting our first million registered users. All these things have happened because you kept believing in me and the work I show up to finish every day.

For a lot of people, wrapping up the decade might not seem much different than the way the previous year ended, but for me, this particular decade marks the biggest and most important chapter of my life. The 2010’s were a decade I will never forget and I wanted to make sure to say thank you.

Looking forward to 2020, there’s some really great stuff I have planned. For starters, for the first time in 11+ years, I am happy to report that I am getting some engineering help and won’t be the only person building TMDB. I feel like I’ve earned this and boy, does TMDB need it. This renewed investment will allow us to finally build some of those features I’ve been tracking for, well… years. Coming soon, I also have a design and branding refresh launching. The moderators have been using this behind the scenes since November and I'm getting close to saying it's ready for launch. This will be launched alongside some pretty awesome features as well, so keep an eye out for that.

As you can see with the stats above for this years recap, 2019 was our biggest year yet. I know it seems like something I say every year, but every year we’re bigger! A particularly interesting stat to me is that 2019 is the first year where the TV edits outpaced the movies edits. I know our name might seem to indicate otherwise (who named this thing anyways?) but seeing TMDB grow like this is all the validation I need to know my dedication and long hours have been worth it. Thanks to every single one of you who made the last year (and decade!) possible.
