Belker's drycleaners undercover catches Dugan, who offers them Joe Keenan and a major ring of police corruption; Furillo copes with the results of the random drug test; Goldblume wrestles with Gina's estate; Hill and Renko spend the day escorting Officer McBear.

Bates gets to know an art teacher; Coffey, Renko, LaRue and Washington bet on who can drive to work the fastest; Renko has to bust his favorite singer for cocaine possession; Goldblume is taken hostage by a militant on the edge of sanity bombarding his neighbors with a high decibel barrage of words.

Belker goes undercover as a cabbie in a very volatile cab territory war; Hill and Renko try to cool down the resentment between a Korean grocer and his black neighbors; Mayor Cleveland's son is busted for drug possession; and Garibaldi is offered a deal to clear his mounting gambling debts.

A runner trying to raise money for cancer research is victimized; Daniels asks Furillo to head up an internal investigation of corruption arising out of Keenan's death; Garibaldi's death shakes the station house; Lee Cleveland comes to the end of his rope; and Howard gets a shock from his latest love.

Belker takes an unexpected bus ride to Springfield; Sid turns Louis Russ over to Buntz, which begins the unravelling of Keenan and Garibaldi's deaths; Jablonski tries to deal with an incompetent khaki officer; and Hunter makes a canine investment.

Furillo's corruption commission delivers its findings and antagonizes Daniels, who is willing to sacrifice a night shift cop involved in an off duty shooting that has incited public opinion; Alan Branford returns as Rambo; and Buntz explores his duties as personnel officer.

Buntz catches a mugger only to lose him when the victim won't press charges; a sculptor refuses to let anyone remove his obscene work of art; Lynnetta pushes Neal about commitment to her and her son with tragic results; Belker goes undercover to learn why so many vagrants have fallen from high buildings recently.

Sgt. Jablonski risks his own money to catch a pair of confidence men; Sgt. Belker acts as a courier for a pair of devious Hasidic jewelry merchants; and Captain Calletano reacts badly when Buntz accuses a lazy Polk Avenue officer of dumping vagrants in Hill Street precinct.

Belker's undercover at a bookie joint gets him involved in a protest against Nazis parading through the precinct; Furillo angers the chief and many others with his hard line pursuit of a senile drug king on trial for a relatively minor sale; Hill's father drifts into town claiming to be dying; and Jablonski tries to mediate between a priest and a scrap metal dealer.

Belker goes to the dogs working undercover at the pound; Furillo chases down the reason he's been denied mortgage insurance; LaRue and Washington bust a former baseball star for drunken driving; and Buntz is held hostage by a vicious parolee.

Coffey tries to mediate between an irate landlord and a tenant who insists an image on his water stained wall is that of the Virgin Mary; the Furillos tries to renew a family relationship with his parents; Buntz uses ""Officer Giblet"" to make a drug bust; and the guys compete in a benefit tug of war competition.

Hill, Renko and Buntz look like heroes when they retrieve a stolen heart needed for a transplant; rookie officer Ron Garfield finds himself in trouble again when a second gun shows up at an officer involved shooting; and Belker misses his wedding ceremony when his undercover as a cocaine cooker heats up.

IAD Shipman continues investigating the Garfield shooting; Hill gets a nasty surprise when he and Renko draw duty delivering corpses to the morgue; Belker is kidnapped on the eve of his second scheduled wedding.

Hunter hallucinates he's aboard a Russian submarine; Belker finally gets married; Renko busts his favorite country singer again; Furillo meets with a political power broker about the Chief's job; Hill takes his daddy home to St. Louis for his burial; Buntz' old partner comes asking for help with a loan shark; and LaRue and Washington use a lady tattoo artist to help them find a killer.

LaRue and Washington continue to stake out the tattoo parlor for a killer; Bates has a tough decision to make about Fabian; Jablonski tries to enforce a city ban on smoking in the station house; Hill meets someone special at his father's funeral; Chief Daniels surprises Furillo by offering to endorse him as his successor; Buntz cuts some corners to get a dealer selling killer synthetic heroin off the streets.

Nachdem Furillo niedergeschossen wird und im Krankenhaus um sein Leben ringt, ruft sich Joyce in Erinnerung, wie sie Furillo einst kennengelernt hat – beziehungsweise nicht kennengelernt, denn anfangs hatte sie kein Interesse an ihm. Zur selben Zeit durchkämmen die Beamten vom Hill Street Revier die Stadt auf der Suche nach dem Attentäter.

Zwischen den Ermittlungen gegen einen Waffenhändler und einen Undercovereinsatz Mick Belkers in einem Pfandhaus, das gestohlene Ware verkauft, gibt es einen Lichtblick für die Beamten des Hill Street Reviers: Captain Furillo ist von seiner Schußverletzung so weit genesen, daß er bald zum Dienst zurückkehren möchte. Seine Absicht wird schneller in die Tat umgesetzt, als jeder sich erhoffte: tödliche Schüsse auf Joe Coffey verlangen Furillos Anwesenheit

Der Mord an Joe Coffey führt zu einer fieberhaften Jagd auf den Killer und manövriert Lucy zwischen die Fronten. Weil sie die einzige Zeugin ist, wird sie so sehr von Butz bedrängt, daß sie beinahe eine Falschaussage macht.

Jesus Martinez wird nach dem Tod seines Arbeitgebers, dem Anwalt Brown, als Mörder gesucht. Henry Goldblume, seit neuestem Mietshausbesitzer, versucht sich vergeblich, gegen die Intrigen eines Immobilienhais zu wehren, wohingegen Belker erfolgreich einen Kreditwucherer überführt. Buntz ist zwischen Pflicht und Freundschaft hin- und hergerissen, als sein alter Freund Donahue zum Hauptverdächtigen in einem Polizistenmord gerät.

Während Buntz im Alleingang gegen seinen Freund und Ex-Partner Donahue wegen Mordes ermittelt, steht Kathryn McBrides Karriere auf dem Spiel, nachdem eine von ihr verhaftete Prostituierte sie wegen sexueller Belästigung angezeigt hat. Und auch Lipsky, ein weiterer neuer Kollege im Hill Street Revier, gerät in Bedrängnis, weil es ihm mißlungen ist, einen Selbstmörder davon abzuhalten, in den Tod zu springen.

Das Opfer gerät zum Täter, als Buntz nicht geglaubt wird, daß er seinen Kollegen Donahue in Notwehr getötet hat. Während Buntz um seinen Ruf kämpft, kämpft ein alter Freund von Belker um sein Leben. Der einstige Stricher Eddie ist an Aids erkrankt. Durch die Querelen um Buntz gerät Furillo unter Druck, weil die Lobby, die ihn zum Bürgermeister machen will, verlangt, daß er Buntz – ganz gleich, ob er schuldig oder nicht ist – fallenläßt.

Die Festnahme eines gesuchten Mehrfachmörders, genannt der „Schleicher“, führt zu einem beispiellosen Mediumrummel im Hill Street Revier, der sich am Ende mehr als Schaden denn als Nutzen erweist.

Der kleine Gauner Bobby findet in einer abgestürzten Sportmaschine eine gewaltige Menge Kokain. Als der Spitzel Sid davon erfährt, hofft er Buntz als Partner zu gewinnen, um mit dem Geld aus dem Drogenverkauf aus der Gosse herauszukommen. Buntz denkt tatsächlich über dieses lukrative Angebot nach – ein tödlicher Fehler.

Während Howard Hunter in Verruf gerät, weil er bei einem Überfall einen Teenager erschießt und anschließend in Frage gestellt wird, ob er wirklich in Notwehr gehandelt hat, sorgt sich Furillo um Jablonski, der sich vehement wehrt, eine lebensrettende Bypass-Operation durchführen zu lassen. Um die Entlassung von Pflichtverteidigern zu boykottieren, machen Joyce und ihre Kollegen Dienst nach Vorschrift und bringen damit ungewollt die Leben einer Gemeinde von Rentnern in Gefahr, die immer wieder Opfer von Raubüberfällen werden.

Der Streik der Pflichtverteidiger lähmt die Arbeit der Polizei. Obwohl Belker einen Mann verhaftet hat, der den gesuchten Rentnermörder kennt, hüllt dieser sich in Schweigen, weil er den Rechtsbeistand von Joyce verlangt – die indes streikt. Lt. Hunter wird degradiert und Lucy nimmt zwei Neulinge mit auf die erste Streife, die sogleich zu einem explosiven Einstand gerät.

Nach den Rassenausschreitungen in seinem Revier verliert Ray Calletano sein Kommando. Furillo muß vermitteln, um Calletano vor Kurzschlußhandlungen zu bewahren. Gleichzeitig wird ein Beamter von Calletanos umstrittenem Revier in die Hill Street versetzt, wo ihm Argwohn entgegenschlägt. Bei einem Einsatz mit Bobby Hill versucht der Neuling zu beweisen, dass er kein Rassist ist – und zahlt einen hohen Preis. Unterdessen geraten Buntz und Flaherty aneinander, um eine seit Jahren unter ihnen schwelende Fehde auszutragen.

LaRue und Washington greifen einen kleinen Gauner auf, der sich schließlich als ein lange gesuchter Massenmörder entpuppt. Stadtrat Wade bauscht seinen – angeblichen – Notwehrschuss, mit dem er einen jugendlichen Dealer niedergestreckt hat, publikumswirksam auf. Weil Furillo dennoch gegen ihn ermittelt, ist Wade jedes noch so niederträchtige Mittel recht, um Furillo und seine Leute in Bedrängnis zu bringen. Buntz bereitet unterdessen die Verhaftung des Kredithais Falco vor, der ihm einen Finger abgehackt hat.

Furillo gerät unter Druck, weil ein puplicitysüchtiger Stadtrat sich in die Polizeiarbeit einmischt und schliesslich einen jugendlichen Dealer erschiesst. Hill, Renko, LaRue und Washington sind einem Drogenboss auf der Spur, der Minderjährige für sich dealen lässt. Und Buntz macht sich ohne Rückendeckung daran, zwei skrupellose Kredithaie zu überführen – und lässt dabei mehr als nur Federn.

Daniels pushes Furillo to drop the Wade investigation; a literary agent offers Goldblume a chance to write his memoirs; Sister Charity works her old magic on Flaherty; and Buntz ties up his loan sharking sting by busting the shylock that cut off his finger.

Während Belker einem Findelkind das Leben rettet, erreicht Furillo die Nachricht, dass sein Vater ermordet wurde. Der Verlust trifft ihn um so härter, als ihm klar wird, dass seine Familie ihm etwas vormacht – offenbar hat sein Vater sich in Wirklichkeit das Leben genommen.

Nachdem ein als Rassist verschrieener weißer Polizist seinen schwarzen Kollegen – angeblich irrtümlich – erschiesst, kommt es zu unerträglichen Spannungen auf dem Polizei Revier Hill Street. Weil das Police Department seit langem verdeckte Ermittlungen gegen den weissen Schützen und sein schwarzes Opfer durchführt, muss Furillo seine Männer von dem Fall abziehen – und wird zugleich verdächtigt, den Mord eines Weißen an einem Schwarzen vertuschen zu wollen.

Joyce wird von ihrem Mandanten Diaz als Geisel genommen und Furillo muss um ihr Leben fürchten. Denn Diaz fühlt sich – irrtümlicherweise – von Joyce an die Polizei verraten und hat nun nichts mehr zu verlieren. Hill und Renko ermitteln gegen einen Jungen, der seine jüngere Schwester sexuell missbraucht haben soll. Und Belker gerät in finanzielle Not, als er bei der Probefahrt eines Gebrauchtwagens das Fahrzeug für die Verfolgung eines Kriminellen lädiert.

Während Hill, Renko und Jablonski zu einem Jagdausflug aufbrechen, der nur von Missgeschicken begleitet ist, leistet Goldblume Überstunden und gerät schließlich in die Gewalt eines Entführers. Als dieser begreift, dass seine Geisel Polizist ist, will er sich Goldblumes entledigen. Unterdessen entdeckt der sonst so rüde Buntz sein Herz für Katheryn McBride und verhilft ihr nach einem ungewollten Todesschuss auf einen Verdächtigen zu neuer Selbstachtung.

Nachdem der aufgebrachte Bobby Hill den Beerdigungszug eines Mafioso aufgelöst hat, erhält er Morddrohungen aus den Unterweltkreisen. Doch niemand bedroht ungestraft einen Kollegen: Vereint gehen die Polizisten vom Hill Street Revier gegen die Mafiosi vor. Unterdessen versucht LaRue einmal mehr, mit zweifelhaften Methoden Beweise gegen einen Drogendealer zu erbringen, und stürzt am Ende in die Grube, die er anderen gegraben hat.

Henry Goldblume beweist Zvilcourage, als er sich gegen den Stadtrat und Chief Daniels aufbäumt, denen Public Relation wichtiger ist als effektive Polizeiarbeit. Seinen Rang und Namen riskierend prangert Goldblume die falsche Politik öffentlich an und wird vom Dienst suspendiert. Howard Hunter gerät in den Sog dieser politischen Krise und befürchtet, wegen eines von ihm begangenen Verfahrensfehlers seine Wiedereinsetzung in den Rang des Lieutenants zu verwirken. Unterdessen kursiert das Gerücht, Joyce würde Furillo betrügen, und Buntz setzt alles daran, die Ehe der beiden zu retten.

Buntz erhält für einen Tag die Führung des Hill Street Reviers und stellt gleich wieder seine Vorliebe für unorthodoxe Methoden unter Beweis. Weil die Stadt die Überstundenbezahlung für die Beamten streichen will, weil sie zu wenig Drogen konfiszieren, initiiert Buntz eine gewaltige Hatz auf Drogendealer, um eine notwendige Quote zu sichern. Dabei überschreitet er den Rahmen der Legalität und wird von Joyce mit Strafmaßnahmen bedroht.

Das Massaker an einer arglosen Familie bringt die Polizisten des Hill Street Reviers nicht nur auf, sondern spaltet auch Furillo und Goldblume, weil ein Schützling Goldblumes, der den Ausstieg aus der kriminellen Szene nahezu geschafft hat, nun zu Spitzeldiensten gezwungen wird.

Die Schüsse eines Polizisten auf einen mexikanischen Einwanderer rufen Ray Calletano auf den Plan, der sich offiziell um die Belange seiner Landsleute kümmert und nun Furillos und Chief Daniels Kopf verlangt. Renko fürchtet, dass seine Frau ihn betrügt und LaRue muss einmal mehr erkennen, dass er nicht einen solchen Schlag beim anderen Geschlecht hat, wie er sich selbst immer einredet. Und Belker gerät bei einem Undercovereinsatz unter Beschuss.

Nach den Schüssen auf ihn ringt Belker auf der Intensivstation um sein Leben, während Buntz ein Kommando anführt, das dem Schützen auf der Spur ist. Weil Buntz nicht gerade zimperlich mit den Verdächtigen umgeht, soll er schließlich von dem Fall abgezogen werden. Indessen wird Renko von einer Prostituierten erpreßt, während Howard Hunter um seine Wiedereinsetzung in den Rang eines Lieutenants fürchtet.

Der junge Darius Milton, als paranoid bekannt, macht LaRue und Washington Sorge, nachdem er wieder auf freien Fuß gesetzt wird und seine Familie von Neuem bedroht. Renko versucht, sich mit seiner Frau zu versöhnen, und Belker kehrt zum ersten Mal seit seiner Verletzung auf das Polizeirevier zurück und ertappt seinen väterlichen Freund Jablonski bei einem bedenklichen Fehltritt.

Ein beliebter Footballspieler, der als Freier verhaftet wird, rückt das Polizeirevier Hill Street in das Rampenlicht des öffentlichen Interesses. LaRue investiert sein ganzes Geld in eine Wette, während Furillo sein ganzes Vermögen seinem Bruder Joe überlässt, dessen Firma kurz vor dem Ruin steht.

Der vermisste Howard Hunter wird nach Tagen gefunden, verschüttet in einem Keller. Seite an Seite mit einem Toten, von dem er sich offenbar ernährt hat. Buntz droht seine Polizeimarke zu verlieren, weil er Drogen gehandelt haben soll. Und wieder einmal droht ein Bandenkrieg, als die Schwester von Jesus Martinez von einer konkurrierenden Bande entführt wird.

Während Buntz um seinen Job bangt, ermittelt Furillo unermüdlich in den Reihen der Polizei, um Buntz zu entlasten und die korrupten Polizisten zu finden, die Buntz hereingelegt haben.
