The Movie Database Support

RE: https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/456750-game-over-man/

I had mentioned this in the past on another movie, but there is an issue with adding certifications / rating to movies in some cases. In this case, the movie is rated TV-MA, but TMDB does not allow such a rating. I understand that there are guidelines and rules in place for data consistency, but it just seems wrong to say that the certification that was actually given to a movie is invalid if you are really cataloging movie data.

I left it as NR, although that is wrong, and added the proper rating in the notes. Even still, this does not record the data for this movie accurately. This is not only an issue with this one movie, but a large number of movies. When can we expect change(s) to accomodate the actual certifications, and what plans might there be to go back and correct those that have been entered incorrectly due to this?

Hey @thwaller,

Well, TV-MA is a TV rating, which is the issue. It's properly supported on TV series but not movies since movies only use MPAA ratings.

I guess for TV movies and apparently digital releases (that seems odd to me but it is what it is) I'll need to add support for TV ratings on movies.

I guess the ratings should be tied to the release type. Meaning, TV ratings wouldn't show on theatrical releases but for TV and digital they would.

I understand completely, it does seem odd, but they have been doing that for a while now. What you propose makes sense.

Has there been further thought on this? It is becoming more and more common that movies are ending up with no/unknown for a rating. One common example of this is all movies that Netflix releases. I am not really sure of the logic and reasoning behind this, using TV- ratings for digital movie releases, but we need to adapt to what they are doing as we have no say or influence on what they do in this matter.

Although I do need to admit that the issue here is on the smaller side, but it is inconvenient when you browse a media center and so many movies have no rating on them. This is due to services like Trakt who rely on and use the data from TMDB. Meaning that if there is no rating listed here, there is no rating listed there. This is because there is no user editable data, it is an import of the TMDB data. So for users, local media centers and browsers use that same data from sources like TMDB and Trakt. One could manually change this data locally on their media center database, but the issue with this is that with any update from sources, that data is overwritten with the data sources no rating or unknown rating. With this, we have a reality of a known rating that cannot be entered because the data source does not allow for what the rating actually is. So as more of these movies are entered with no rating because the actually rating is considered invalid, the more movies that are entered with incomplete data that will be in need of fixing. From a data management standpoint, it seems destructive to leave this as it is, considering that technically the fault is on the side here at TMDB for not supporting the movie's proper attributes.

There has not been any more thought about it yet. I have created a ticket for this here. Voting for tickets helps me prioritize the work to do.

I don't have any updates, there's a lot to do (as you can see on my Trello board) but at least now it's being tracked.

Cheers.

I understand, and have voted for it. I wanted to emphasise that this is not really a feature or something I want, but is more something that is important to the data and creates a growing problem with every release in this category that is added, not just to the data itself, but also increasing the amount of time that will be needed to be gone back through and corrected later.

I also wanted to point out, on the off chance it is not noticed, that there are two other items on the Up Next list that are also dealing with certifications: https://trello.com/c/R8Fw2BaW/100-add-official-thai-certifications https://trello.com/c/cQXwOuOa/147-add-official-mexico-certifications so maybe there is a chance to combine them while you are already making changes in that area.

Thanks for adding it to the list, it being tracked will surely help.

Awesome, thanks. Agreed, it would be a useful data addition.
