The Movie Database Support

I considered using TheMovieDB.org since OMDBApi.com has been having such serious issues lately, rendering it useless. One thing it had that was super nice was integration with IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. It would be amazing if TheMovieDB.org had integration for these things. I've seen people request that on here elsewhere but thought I'd post it here! Any plans of integrating this in the future?

At this time I do not have plans to integrate RT ids (this could change, there's some stuff happening in my pipeline that might convince me to) but with regards to IMDb, what are you looking for that you can't do already with IMDB ids?

Ideally I'd like to get the rating that IMDB has, as well as the score that Rotten Tomatoes has. So a total of 4 data points:

  1. The ID of IMDB, so as to provide an outbound link
  2. The IMDB score
  3. The link to Rotten Tomatoes
  4. The score on Rotten Tomatoes

Currently TheMovieDB has 1 of those 4. OMDBApi.com had all 4 data points, which was awesome.

It's a bummer that IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes don't have their own APIs. In theory it should be possible to get the IMDB score from the IMDB ID; but there's no official API that does this.

Hi Martyn,

Gotcha. Understood! Unfortunately I don't have plans for those right now. 9/10 features I build are to accommodate specific features here on TMDb and at this time we don't have any use for that data, hence it not being present. Should that ever change then I'll definitely consider it but right now I'm focused on other things.

OMDB provides all Rotten Tomatoes information. I think that if you want to get Rotten Tomatoes information without using any 3rd party service you have to follow these two ways:

  1. Scraping Rotten Tomatoes.
  2. Using Rotten Tomatoes API end point.

I tried both, but I've failed. Because they provide API access for nearly $65,000 per year and the scraping is done only by using movie title, they don't permit to query by IMDB id anymore. It will require too much time if you want to query by movie title, so I couldn't do it because I didn't have enough time.

Hopefully, in the near future, TMDB will provide Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and Letterboxd scores. wink

That would definitely be amazing. :)

I would also loovvee to see Rotten Tomatoes scores on here. For me personally, the ability to filter by RT score is a necessary feature of a movie database :)

I'd love to see this too

Hi @matt3224,

At this time we're fairly unlikely to add any more external IDs. These companies keep their IP very close to their chest and in many cases, even consider IDs to be licensed data. On top of the legal issues, as I mentioned above, features like this become low priority unless TMDb has a specific use case for them, and at this time we don't.

I'd love to see imdb rating score inside themovie db api too. This will be the best feature for me

Hi @travisbell

I have downloaded data from themovie api, but unable to convert into dataframe in python due to nested json objects. Do you plan to simplify the same? I am using OMDB and easy to convert..

@sdhilip Could you create a new post about this going into some more detail. No sense going off topic here. Thanks.
