Monk’s meditation on WWII and recurring cycles of intolerance, fascism, and cruelty in history originated in 1976 as a live stage work utilizing elements of music, images, movement, dialogue, film, sound, and light. This film version, shot on 16mm in the Lepercq Space at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1977, was created in partnership with the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts as part of their initiative to document ground-breaking live performance for future restaging. QUARRY centers on a sick American child (played by Monk herself) whose world darkens as her illness progresses, this darkening including the rise of a dictator. A unique document of this innovative, boundary-blurring production, and a work of art on its own terms, replete with a film-within-a-film directed by Monk in 1975.

Marble—in its raw state and as a noble product—is the matter that Quarry is made of. The film portrays two distinct interiors, a large underground marble quarry in Vermont, and several showrooms of Manhattan luxury condos. In between stands a solid reflection about the material choices associated to these architectures and the stone's value within a speculative economy.

This thriller investigates the mysterious assassination of a gay pastor in rural South Africa. Without witnesses or explanations, the crime appears to the police and others as a jigsaw puzzle without enough pieces. The police then suspect and arrest people based on the usual prejudices, black and coloured people who plant marijuana in this case. Meanwhile, the true assassin not only goes his way unpunished from the very beginning, but becomes one of the rural town's most respected citizens. The sheriff at one point does begin having certain suspicions, and from there on the bulk of the plot is played out. The location is a very arid part of South Africa, so with so much desert rock, there are bound to be quarries. Some may reveal important secrets.

A collaborative film experiment that attempts to engage the viewer with the materiality of filmmaking and glimpses of an abandoned industrial site on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, UK. The film was shot on Super8 and hand processed, however, an accidental misloading of the film led to much of it becoming stuck together, obscuring the exposed images underneath the film material. The music is written in response to the material quality of the film form, with tones and melody revealing themselves as identifiable images appear and are lost.

The supernatural tour starts at the abandoned Split Rock Quarry in Syracuse, the site of a terrible explosion at a TNT factory. It moves on to two spooky castles in central New York and culminates at Fort Ontario (on the shores of Lake Ontario), which boasts two centuries' worth of documented ghost stories.

This movie is an attempt to document a place; not only its image as lensed, but its weather, its soil, and its toxins. The organisms in the water and the soil have made their marks on it; even the leached metals in this exhausted quarry pit's waters can be seen in the film.
