Money is in established franchises. Somebody could try to adapt "Eyes of the Overworld" but folks would likely make fun of the stilted dialogue and the funny character names, and there's not enough of a following to carry such a film through to financial success. Word around the Web is that there's a series adaptation of "The Black Company" coming, which will probably flop, seeing as that series doesn't have the following or the drama of George Martin's stuff.

I don't think the problem is that Hollywood is creatively bankrupt, as it's more of a money machine for creative folks that it has confidence in, and there are always tons of creative people out there. Maybe Hollywood is a bit top-heavy with their funding, and overly cautious, but if they weren't blowing hundreds of millions on projects that flop, maybe they'd be more willing to take risks.

Not really (creative bankruptcy), as it's a studio project since they had bought Midway and looking to move their newly acquired IPs to their already established media. So expect more Midway games to appear on the big screen. Besides as much as one may complain about video game movies in general, I personally can't as it's actually a pretty fun watch.

If it is a fun watch then it does not matter what inspired it.

There are plenty of original films being made, but they're more of a gamble than adding The Rock into an existing property.

If people went to see more "creative" (for want of a better description) films, then Hollywood would make more of them.
